DEATH SURPRISED HER

From brutal murder of a cop in pursuit of a robbery suspect, to the execution, years later, of a detective Sergeant, the murdered cop’s son, prompted to meet a snout promising information about his father’s murder. The murder investigation goes cold, as had the earlier one, much to the sadness of widow and mother Anne Monkton.

Anne is not a quitter; she rebuilt after Colin’s murder; she’ll do it again after Ron’s. Her journey takes her to join the Victim Support Scheme as a counsellor; she has much to offer, as she discovers when her good friend Esther confides about being falsely accused of theft and threatened with prison. Anne knows instinctively her friend is being blackmailed.

Cold Case manager, retired Inspector Sean Daley with former boss, businesswoman Debbie North, want to help; speedily uncovering Esther’s secret, her familial relationship to multi-millionaire loan shark and international money launderer, Alex MacQuoid, who just happened to be implicated in the first of the two killings. Debbie North was the investigating officer in that killing; she has unfinished business with Alex; coincidence or design, Debbie and Sean need to find out.

They discover that former detective Sid Mitchum, sacked for tampering with evidence in that case, is involved in framing Esther, and he possesses photographs of Super Model, Kim MacQuoid, wife of Alex, in impoverished surroundings, not the luxury expected. Is there a mystery about her identity, is she being blackmailed, is she in danger of abduction? More odd results appear; Conor MacQuoid, Alex’s son is related to Esther, is Kim’s secret lover, and is missing.

So many coincidences about the situation Sean and Debbie ponder whether they’re not coincidence, but events orchestrated by someone with such a comprehensive knowledge of both of them as to be certain one event would have the domino effect leading on to the next and so on. Who could that be? Debbie has one person in mind, but hopes she’s wrong.

When they find out about an Island in the Thames Estuary, owned by Alex, and luxuriously refurbished by him at a cost in millions of £’s, they know it must hold secrets that they are compelled to uncover.

Their covert visit to the Island goes wrong when Sean is shot and lost at sea. Debbie, bereft and broken has to tell Sean’s wife.

It is not all gloom, there is joy for Kim MacQuoid.
